Every production team has a version of this story. An interview the host waited months to get. Big guest, one shot, no redo. The guest recorded on laptop speakers with the mic gain pinned so high that every consonant came back flat-topped and distorted.

You can spend a full day on a file like that. It will go from unlistenable to listenable. It will never get to good, because you cannot rebuild a waveform that was destroyed before it was written to disk.

That is the best argument I know for what podcast audio engineering services really are, and why the most valuable hour an engineer spends on your show is often the one before you hit record.

Editing and Engineering Are Two Different Jobs

An editor makes decisions about content. What gets cut, where the pacing drags, which forty seconds of throat-clearing at the top disappears.

An engineer makes decisions about sound. Levels, tone, noise, dynamics, and whether the file meets the technical spec the platforms expect. Most small shows buy these bundled from the same person and never think about the split until something goes wrong. The short version: the editor decides what your listener hears, the engineer decides how it sounds when they hear it.

Under the hood, a proper engineering pass on an episode is doing five things.

Cleanup. Hum, hiss, air conditioning, laptop fans, chair creaks, mouth clicks, and the neighbor’s dog. Some of this is surgical and some is a broadband noise reduction judgment call, and overdoing it is worse than leaving it. Aggressive noise reduction is why some podcasts sound like they were recorded underwater.

Balance between voices. Your guest is quiet, you are loud, and one of you turns their head away from the mic every time they laugh. Getting two voices to sit at the same perceived level across an hour is fiddly manual work, and it is the single most noticeable difference between amateur and professional audio.

Tone shaping. Cutting the low rumble, taming the harsh upper mids on a bright microphone, adding a little presence to a dull one. De-essing when a mic is unkind to the letter S. We wrote about de-essing and why it matters because it is the one that hosts hear immediately once someone points it out.

Loudness and mastering. This is the part with actual numbers in it. The working standard for podcasts is around minus 16 LUFS integrated for stereo, minus 19 for mono, with true peaks kept at or below minus 1 dBTP so nothing clips on playback. Apple and Spotify normalize what you upload anyway, so a wildly loud master does not make you louder in someone’s earbuds. It just makes you flatter and more tiring to listen to.

Consistency across episodes. Episode 40 should sound like episode 39. That means the same chain, the same targets, and someone checking against the previous episode rather than mixing each one from scratch. This is the part solo freelancers most often skip and the part listeners feel without being able to name.

The Service Almost Nobody Sells: Someone on the Call

Here is the gap. Everything above happens after the recording exists. By then the ceiling is already set.

Search engines get asked, constantly, whether there are services that provide remote recording support with an experienced engineer on the session. It is a reasonable question and there are surprisingly few straight answers, so here is ours. Yes, this exists. We do it. Some studios call it a tech check, some call it session support. It is a short call before or at the start of your recording where an engineer looks at what your setup is actually producing rather than what it is supposed to produce.

In fifteen minutes an engineer will catch:

  • A guest on AirPods or laptop speakers, and talk them onto the wired earbuds in their drawer
  • Input gain set so hot that peaks are already clipping, or so low that the noise floor comes up with the voice
  • Headphones off, which means the host’s voice bleeds back into the guest’s mic and cannot be separated later
  • The wrong device selected, which is how people record an hour of their built-in laptop mic while a good microphone sits idle
  • Local recording not switched on, so the whole session depends on someone’s internet holding
  • A room with a hard slap echo, which is usually fixable in ninety seconds by moving the mic and closing a curtain
  • Phone notifications, doorbells, and the school run window nobody thought about

None of that is glamorous work. It is the cheapest insurance in your entire production budget, and it is the difference between a rescue and a good episode.

What Cannot Be Fixed Afterwards

I want to be straight about this, because the ads for AI cleanup tools imply otherwise.

Clipping is permanent. When the signal hits the ceiling, the top of the waveform is gone, and no plugin knows what was there. We can soften it. We cannot restore it.

Room reverb is close to permanent. There are tools that reduce it and they have improved a lot, but heavy room sound baked into a recording leaves artifacts when you strip it out. A better mic position beats any de-reverb algorithm ever written. Our budget acoustics guide covers the cheap version of that fix.

Bluetooth audio is compressed at capture and stays compressed. That thin, swimmy quality on a guest’s track is usually a Bluetooth headset, and no amount of processing brings back what the codec threw away.

A missing local file is missing. If the session recorded only through the internet connection and the connection dropped, we are working with whatever survived.

When Your Show Needs This—and When It Doesn’t

If you record alone, in the same room, with the same microphone every week, you probably do not need session support. You need a solid one-time setup pass and then consistency.

If you interview guests, you probably do. Guests are the variable you cannot control, and they arrive with whatever hardware and habits they have. A recurring show with unfamiliar guests every week is exactly where a fifteen minute check pays for itself several times over.

If your show is carrying business weight, a client-facing interview or a brand show, then yes. The cost of one unusable interview with someone senior is higher than a year of tech checks.

What It Costs

Mastering is normally inside your editing price rather than a separate line. If someone is charging you for an edit, loudness and cleanup should be part of it. Ask, because it is not always true. Our editing cost breakdown shows where those tiers land.

Session support is usually billed as a flat fee per recording, not hourly, since the whole point is that it takes fifteen minutes when nothing is wrong. Standalone mastering for shows that edit in- house is normally a modest per-episode rate.

The honest math: if a tech check costs you a small flat fee and it saves one interview a year that would otherwise be unusable, it has paid for itself and then some.
